Late 17th Century Oak High Back Box Settle
This lovely oak settle had enjoyed a busy and useful life over many years, but now required extensive work. The frame, patched in places and held with the occasional 'added' screw or nail, needed careful dismantling before work could begin. The original legs had disappeared some time ago and now the carcase was resting on its bottom boards where the lower rails were now showing signs of damage. The surfaces, possibly in an attempt to 'freshen up' its appearance, had been coated with a very dark varnish and now needed to be removed. Cleaned and dismantled, the components could be assessed for damage and suitable repairs made. All repairs were made with old surface or period timbers.
